Rufus: Pit Bulls Make Great Partners!

Rufus and Maryellen Swiatek, who live in Vernon, NJ, recieved an Animal Farm Foundation Achievement Award for their commitment to community service and for paving the way for other dogs that look like pit bulls within their community and beyond.  In 2002, Maryellen adopted Rufus, and just one year later Rufus had earned his AKC CGC© Certification. In 2004, Rufus became a certified therapy dog and in 2005 he passed the American Temperment Test.

Since becoming a therapy dog, Rufus has spent every Saturday at the local hospital where his visits were especially appreciated in the Behavioral Mental Health unit. The unit director there said "The therapy he provides is immediate and accessible to all clients, who truly look forward to his visits".  Once a month Rufus goes to a nursing home and twice a month he visits an assisted living facility. 

In addition, Rufus spends at least one day a month visiting a local elementary school, where 1st and 2nd grade students read to him "to provide incentive and encouragement". Together, Maryellen and Rufus are showing their community that dogs labeled pit bulls make great companions AND great partners!
